,.mpR
April 18, 1999 U
-I. -.'IAL HEAL. .
Mr. Michael Infurna, Sr. REHS i l SERMCE;S
San Joaquin County PHS
Environmental Health Division '
P.O. Box 388
Stockton, CA 95201-0388
Re: Scope of work letter: Former Canteen Facility, 1500 Shaw Road, Stockton, CA;
Site Code 1727, AES Project No. 145-94009-01
Dear Mr. Infurna:
This letter is to inform you of the future work Applied Earth Sciences, Inc. (AES) is
proposing for the referenced site: AES is proposing to install two monitor wells and four soil
borings. The first monitor well (MW-13D)will be installed to a total depth of 120 feet, and
the second monitor well (MW-13) to a total depth of 46 feet. The four soil borings will be
drilled to a maximum total depth of 120 feet each. The proposed locations of the wells are
shown on Figure 1. The purpose of MW-13D is to continue to evaluate the soil and
groundwater quality at depths of historically low groundwater levels (approximately 120 feet
in 1978). Groundwater levels at this site have ranged from approximately 45 to 75 feet
below surface grade since 1993.
Soil samples will be collected at five-foot intervals during the monitor well and soil
boring installations. The samples will be screened in the field for the presence of volatile
organics using a PID meter. Field screening of samples will determine which soil samples
collected will be submitted to a California Department of Health Services approved
laboratory for analysis. As referenced in the September 25, 1997 memo published by the
Public Health Services San Joaquin County Environmental Health Services the soil sampling
parameters for MW13-D will include Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl-Benzene, and Total Xylenes
(BTEX)by EPA Method (8020); Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons Gasoline Range Organics
(TPHg) by EPA Method (8015); Di-isopropyl Ether (DIPE), Ethyl-Tertiary Butyl Ether
(ETBE), Methyl-Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE), Tertiary-Amyl Methyl Ether (TAME), and
Tertiary-Butanol by EPA Method 8260 (Oxygenates); Methanol and Ethanol. All other soil
samples will be anylyze for MTBE and BTEX by EPA Method 8020. Additional samples
may be submitted to confirm positive results.
Groundwater samples will be collected from the monitor wells and submitted to an
appropriate California laboratory for analysies. The water sampling parameters will include
BTEX (8021), TPHg (8015), and Oxygenates (8260) as referenced above.
2833 Trinity Square, Suite 149 9 Carrollton, Texas 75006 • Tel: (972)416-7171 • Fax: (972)416-7175
