excavator moved to the south end of the excavation, and soil
removal continued. The clean fill was stored in a separate pile
than the underlying spoil, which was placed in the empty truck,
(which had returned from Forward. ) At this time, the size of the
excavation was approximately 12' wide and 30' long, grading from
12' deep at the north end to about 9-10' at the south.
While removing spoil from a depth of 10--12' , about 20 feet from
the north end, a very strong petroleum odor was noted, and the
removed spoil revealed obvious staining and discoloration. As
digging progressed, the contamination appeared to be strongest on
the east and south wall, and the bottom. The west wall did not
show any apparent contamination. The contaminated soil consisted
of very clayey sand & sandy clay, with lenses of very hard, dense
clay, (hardpan. ) This spoil was not placed in the truck, but was
stored on site pending further profiling.
The remaining clean spoil was placed in the truck, and was trans-
ported to Forward under prior agreement. A total of 2 loads, (36
cubic yards, ) wa delivered to the disposal facility; copies of
the receipts for the spoil are attached as APPENDIX
. Excavation continued to a depth of about 20-21 ' , the limit of the
equipment being used. Contamination was still present on the
south and east walls, but work was discontinued due to space
limitations. The dimensions of the excavation at this time were
approximately 32' long, and 12 to 15' wide; refer to PLATES VI &
VII for details.
Five (5) soil samples were taken from the sides of the excavation
as directed by the RG and Michael Collins of the County EHD using
the excavator bucket. It was not possible to obtain a soil
sample from the bottom at the south end due to depth of the hole.
A 2" X 6" brass tube was driven into the spoil collected in the
bucket by the geologist, briefly described, promptly sealed with
teflon tape and plastic end caps, and then sealed with duct tape.
The metal tubes were then labeled and placed on ice pending
transport to a State Certified laboratory for analysis The
locations and identifying number of each soil sample is shown on
PLATES V Two (2) composite samples were taken from the
spoil pile for characterization purposes. They were sealed,
labeled and stored with the other soil samples. The excavation
was left open pending the results of the laboratory analysis. It
was barracaded off with sawhorses and metal drums and marked with
yellow plastic tape. Samples were transported under chain of
custody to FGL Environmental for analysis.
Laboratory results of the above work revealed that a minor amount
5
