The contaminated soil consisted of very clayey sand & sandy clay, with lenses of very hard, dense ' clay, (hardpan. ) This spoil was not placed in the truck, but was stored on site pending further profiling. I The remaining clean spoil was placed in the truck, and was trans- ported to Forward under prior agreement. A total of 2 loads, tib cubic yards, ) wa delivered to the disposal facility; copies of the receipts for the spoil are attached as Exhibit F. Excavation continued to a depth of about 20-21 " , the limit of the equipment being used. Contamination was still present on the south and east walls, but wore was discontinued due to space limitations. The dimensions of the excavation at this time were approximately 32 ' long, and 12 to 15 ' wide; refer to Plates VI & ' VII for details. Five (5) soil samples were taken from the sides of the excavation as directed by the RG and Michael Collins of the County EHD using ' the excavator bucket. It was not possible to obtain a soil sample from the bottom at the south end due to depth of the hole. A 2" X 6" brass tube was driven into the spoil collected in the bucket by the geologist, briefly described, promptly sealed with teflon tape and plastic and caps, and then sealed with duct tape. The metal tubes were then labeled and placed on ice pending I _ t ransport to a State Certifiad laboratory for analysis. Theocations and identifying number of each soil sample is shown on lates VI & VII. Two (2) composite samples were taken from the spoil pile for characteri2ation purposes. They were sealed, labeled and stored with the other soil samples. The excavation was left open pending the results of the laboratory analysis. it was barricaded off with sawhorses and metal drums and marked with yellow plastic tape. Laboratory results of the above work revealed that a minor amount of contamination was measured from the sail sample taken from the northwest wall at 10 ' , and high levels of BTEX and TPH-G were detected from the soil samples taken from the southeast and south walls, (refer to Plates VI & V II for their locations Re amounts of contamination.
