mottled appearance due to the presence of'kwhile inclusions &
irregular iron staining. A very faint odor was noted when the
core barrel was opened; it was not characteristic of petroleum,
and a portion of the core materia] was quickly placed in a plas-
tic bag & tightly sealed. After setting for 5-10 minutes, the
probe of the PID meter was inserted into the bag; no reading was
registered The middle tube was promptly sealed by the method
described above, labeled, and placed on ice.
The augers were advanced to 70' , and when the auger plug was
retrieved, the bottom was covered with damp brown clay_ A clean
core barrel filled with new brass tubes was lowered into the
auguer, and a Gore was taken from 70' to 71' 6" . Recovery
consisted of 18" of silty water sand, very fine to medium
grained, soft, dark brown in color No odors or "calor" were
noted, but a portion of the cored material which was placed
in a sealed plastic bag gave a reading of 10 ppm on the PID
meter. A tape was run into the augers, and indicated water at
69' . The middle tube of the cored material was sealed as
described earlier, & placed on ice.
The augers were advanced to 81' preparatory to completing as a
• monitoring well. Based upon penetration rate, the lithology
changed from sand to clay at about 73' . This was confirmed when
the auger flights were pulled. Refer to EXHIBIT XV for a com-
plete description of lithology, blow counts & other details.
After completion of drilling operations, 4" OD, flush, screw-
joint, blank & slotted PVC was run into the hole, with bottom at
81 ' . The bottom 15' was shop perforated with horizontal .02"
slots; the rest was blank. The well was completed by the method
described earlier for MW-5; details are given on the completion
diagram -- EXHIBIT XVII. After placing & locating the bentonite
seal, the rest of the auger flights were pulled & decontaminated.
The preserved soil samples were again stored in the locked
refrigerator in Canteens' warehouse.
After cleaning of the flights & drilling equipment, the rig was
mobilized on the location marked for MW-7; (refer to PLATE V for
details. ) The augers were advanced to 40' , and operations were
suspended for the night.
Auggst 24, 1994 -- Wm. Hunter, RG, arrived on location at 0750;
the crew was making up the core barrel for taking the first core.
Core #1 was taken from 40' to 41' 6" ; recovery was 12" of tan to
brown dry clay, not friable or plastic. Occasional white mineral
inclusions & sand grains. No odor was noted, and a portion
screened with the PID meter .read zero. One brass tube was
. promptly sealed & preserved on ice. The sampling, testing, &
core preservation procedures conformed to those described
8
