lowest levels measured in January, 1994 _
LOCATION OF NEARBY, WELLS
The property is supplied by city water; according to the San
Joaquin County Flood Control District map, there are no private
or domestic wells within 1/2 mile of the site Available records
reveal that most wells are completed below 125 feet due to the
lack of sufficient aquifers above that depth.
However, there are four groundwater monitoring wells on a parcel
owned by U. S. Chemical Just south of where Shaw Road makes a
sharp bend. Those wells were placed to monitor possible ground-
water contamination from a waste-water evaporation pond. A
review of the file of that site shows that the hydraulic gradient
has been generally towards the northwest, distinctly different
from that measured on. the Canteen property. PLATE VI shows the
approximate locations of the wells on the two properties.
PRIOR USAGE OF UST
The 10, 000 gallon UST had been installed sometime prior to 1984
for the purpose of fueling Canteen Corp. delivery trucks and
• company vehicles. According to company personel, it had only
contained unleaded gasoline. Records of fuel purchase and
volumes used are not available. The pump island had been located
on the southeast side of the tank, dust at the edge of the
existing carport roof.
SUMMARY OF P IOR WORK
March 1992 - A 10, 000 gallon UST which had contained gasoline
was removed from the site_ Soil samples taken after tank removal
were below detection limits, but samples from the removed spoil
revealed the presence of Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene, & TPH--G.
The removed spoil was returned to the hole
November, 1992 -- The site of the removed UST was reentered to
remove the spoil which had been returned to the hole. During
this work, additional soil contamination was encountered on the
east, south, & west walls; (refer to PLATES VII & VIII, & TABLE
IT for details of that work ) Space constraints prevented further
work; the excavation was later filled with clean soil & pea
gravel.
Januar 1993 - Wm. J. Hunter & Associates, (WJH, ) prepared a
workplan to place five (5) soil borings around the site of the
removed UST in an attempt to define the limits of soil contami-
nation. A copy of that workplan is included as APPENDIX B.
3
