(OxyCheni), SAN
JOAQUIN COUNTY, Case #4397
We have reviewed the Supplemental Soil and Groundwater Sampling Work Plan prepared-by
The Source Group, Inc., dated 28 April 2000. We concur with the objectives in the scope of
work to collect additional soil and groundwater data as described in the document, but ha-,---
comments regarding the analytical methods proposed as follows:
Table 2 and Table 3,Analytical Methods for Soil and Groundwater, respectively, show that
sulfolane is a pesticide and recommends using USEPA Method 8080 as an analytical method.
Firstly, sulfolane is not a pesticide but a solvent used as a carrier for the pesticides EDB and
DBCP. Secondly, EPA Method 8080 has been deleted from SW 846 and replaced with the
updated EPA Method 8081A (see attached SW-846 Status Tables). Because sulfolane is a
solvent, OxyChem should use EPA Method 8015 with a detection limit of 20 ppb (µg/1).
Furthermore, OxyChem proposes using EPA Method 504.1 for soil and groundwater anal'sis for
EDB and DBCP. Again, this method is an older method. OxyChem should use EPA Method
8021B with a detection limit of 0.01 ppb (µg/1).
In order for the project to go forward in a timely manner, we find the report acceptable with the
condition OxyChem ensures that updated methods shall be used in the analysis of samples_
Please submit replacement pages for Table 2 and Table 3 showing these updates to confi= this
condition.
In addition to the SW-846 Status Tables enclosed, please be aware of information availablz- on
the internet at http•//wv<v epa Qov/epaoswer/hazwaste/test/sw846.htm.
California Environmental Protection Agency
r"Recycled Paper
'o
