1.0 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND
As a follow up to the detection of Dibromochloropropane (DBCP)
and Ethylene Dibromide (EDB) during a recent soil survey conducted at the
J.R. Simplot Company (Simplot) facility in Lathrop California (Figure 1), the
Occidental Chemical Corporation (OCC) has prepared the following site
investigation workplan to delineate the areal extent of the compound
presence in excess of 1.0 mg/kg.
The recently completed soil survey was conducted in preparation for
a minor construction project which required limited excavation. This survey
took place in the former agricultural chemical area of the Simplot facility
(Figure 2). This entire area is presently covered with asphalt and will
remain covered after the canopy extension construction project. The
results of the soil survey indicated elevated concentrations of DBCP and
EDB in one of the six soil samples collected from the locations shown on
Figure 3. The concentrations of DBCP and EDB detected were 1,400
mg/kg and 22 mg/kg respectively in the soil sample collected from a two
foot depth at location SW. In addition to the fumigant compounds
detected, other organochlorine pesticides were also detected. The results
of the initial survey are contained on Table 1.
Based on the results of the initial survey, OCC plans to conduct a
more detailed investigation of the soils around boring SW to delineate the
areal extent of the compound residues outside the building foundation.
The following discussion provides the details of this proposed investigation.
1
