GEOMATRIX
parameters (pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, electric conductivity, and turbidity)will be
measured. Groundwater samples will be collected in laboratory-prepared containers,placed in
ice-cooled chests, and delivered to the laboratory under chain-of-custody procedures.
5.1.3 Supply Well Sampling
In addition to the monitoring wells, Simplot's supply wells (production well and backup well;
Figure 3) will also be sampled. Procedures for sampling and analysis of the supply wells will
be similar to those for the monitoring wells,with the exception that if the wells are pumping,
they will not be purged prior to sampling.
5.1.4 Pumping Test
Geomatrix plans to perform an aquifer pumping test for Simplot's backup production well
located just northeast of the lined ponds (Figure 3). Pressure tranducers to measure the effects
of the pumping will be placed in water table well LP-5; shallow zone wells PW1-48,LP-2, and
LP-7; intermediate zone well PWI-129; and deep zone well PWI-180. Monitoring wells
PWI-129 and PW1-180 are collocated with monitoring well PW1-48,which is shown on
Figure 3. Instead of placing a pump in the well to induce drawdown in nearby wells,the
standard function and pumping of the production well will be utilized and measured.
Approximately 1 week of data will be collected for analysis. The basic procedures for the
pumping test and data analysis are presented in Appendix A
5.1.5 Nature and Extent of Release
Upon completion of the Phase I EMP and, if necessary,the Phase II EMP, Geomatrix will
prepare a conceptual hydrogeological model for the Lathrop facility to provide the framework
for assessing the extent and nature of release. The nature and extent will be evaluated based on
comparison with concentration limits (Table 2),which include background concentrations of
dissolved solids and detectable concentrations of organic COCl. The nature and extent will be
graphically presented to Simplot and Occidental in the form of isoconcentration plots of COCs
in the shallow and intermediate groundwater intervals.
5.2 ENGINEERING FEASIBILITY STUDY
Upon satisfactory completion of the EMP, an EFS will be prepared to describe/evaluate
corrective action measures that could be taken to achieve the WQPS (concentration limits;
Table 2). The initial EFS evaluation will include the development of a numerical model of the
impacted area. Based on the nature and extent of the releases, groundwater remediation
objectives will be developed and remediation alternatives will be identified.
