PUBLIG-'HEALTH SER CES
. o
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY ,
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 95202
2091468-3420 C (Opy
JAMES GIOTTONINI
PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR
CITY OF STOCKTON MAY 0 6 1998
425 N EL DORADO ST
STOCKTON CA 95202
RE: 110 W SONORA ST SITE CODE: 1253
FIRE STATION#2
STOCKTON CA
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) has
reviewed the Fourth Quarter 1997 Status Report for the above referenced site dated February 24,
1998 prepared by ATC Associates, Inc, and has the following recommendations:
1) Conduct a one-day vapor extraction test(VET) on the two vapor wells (VW) that currently
have a screened interval above groundwater, VW-1 and VW5-shallow, in order to assess the
feasibility of vapor extraction as a remedial alternative for the contamination in the vadose
zone. Two VETS had been performed previously in September 1992 and again in January
1994, but static water level has since risen considerably, from approximately 41' below
ground surface (bgs) to 27' bgs. Therefore, a new pilot test and feasibility study is
recommended.
2) Consider air sparging as a remedial technology for the contamination in the saturated zone.
At present, the results of the lab analyses of the groundwater samples are elevated in the
deeper screened vapor wells which indicates active remediation is necessary. An initial
screening to evaluate the effectiveness of air sparging in conjunction with vapor extraction
should be performed.
3) Continue quarterly monitoring of all the wells on site.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jeff Wong at(209) 468-0335.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division _
Jeffrey Wong , EHS, Trainee Margaret agorio, REHS
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit IV Supervisor
JW:Ib
c: COS Public Works-Jim Escobar
C" RWQCB, Central Valley Region - Pat Anderson
c: Drew Van Allen -ATC Associates Inc.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
