toward the recovery well or trench. In this manner, ground water containing dissolved
gasoline hydrocarbons is removed from the subsurface and pumped to aboveground storage
and treatment facilities. The extrac:cd ground water is then treated to remove the dissolved
hydrocarbons; the treated Nvater is subsequently discharged to the sanitary sewer system,
reinjected into the aquifer, or hauled to an appropriate disposal facility. Hydrocarbon
concentrations in extracted ground water can be reduced by a variety of methods, including
air stripping, carbon filtration, bioremediation, or oxidation by chemical reaction or
ultraviolet light irradiation. The method used is dependant on the rate of ground-water
extraction, the initial hydrocarbon concentrations, and the target hydrocarbon concentrations
in the treated water. Under some circumstances, extracted ground water with relatively low
concentrations of dissolved hydrocarbons can be discharged directly to the sanitary sewer
without treatment.
Ground-water remediation by extraction and treatment is a conventional technique and may
be applicable at the site. Design of the recovery and treatment facilities will require
additional hydrogeologicaI investigation, including installation of a pumping test/recovery a
well and conduction and analysis of a pumping test. Data from the pumping test will be
used to evaluate the hydraulic characteristics of the affected aquifer and to estimate Ill-
design
lt_design parameters of the recovery and treatment facilities.
Applied GOOSYS MS
