UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANKS
.. On September 23, 1988, the Environmental Protection Agency
Published the final federal rules governing the installation and
operation of some 1 . 4 million tank systems nationwide . Many have
already begun spending an estimated $1 billion to test their
systems for leaks , or remove and replace them altogether .
Soil gas analysis is a highly effective, non-disruptive method for
detecting and delineating subsurface contamination from leaking
underground storage tanks (LUSTs) , By measuring the volatile
Y organic compounds migrating to the surface in the vicinity of
LUSTs , contaminant flumes can be quickly identified and more cost-
effective remediation plans developed.
Typical Soil Gas Survey Results
♦ ♦ PRQUuci VAovas
♦
t
.,....... iREE RAOQV67
w D1ssOI YE0 PROOLJCT
SCALE TYPICAL SOIL GAS SURVEY RESULTS=-.ti:..
0 50 100 FEET
MAP SHOWING BENZENE CONCENTRATIONS
( PARTS PER BILLION )
• SOIL GAS SAMPLE
LOCATION . •
%0
0 NO 6100
pp 000
1500
BURIED TANK
PUMPS
. . o. o
SERVICE
r STATION
O0
I p
pO
\O
