CALIFORNIA WATER LAP
QUALITY ASSURMCEIQUALiTY weNTROL
MANAGEMENT SUMMARY
{Cadtircasd
so that any procedure performed can be reconstructed from supporting
documenta-tion.with an accurate audit trail to their source. CWL utilizes a process for the tracking
of all reagents. standards, and preparations. Information that is documented for
reagents and "as-is standards' includes the code number, item name. manufacturer,
lot number, concentration. by whom it was opened, and the date emptied. Prepara-
tions and standards are documented with the code, date, preparation codes of reagents
or standards used, volume prepared. preparer's name, standardization date, actual
concentration. restandardlzation or expiration date, and any comments pertaining to
the preparation.
Equipment Maintenance
" All equipment and instrumentation used in an analysis must be properly main-
tained and verlRed. Specific procedures for preventive maintenance are outlined for
an major analytical instna mentation. A laboratory logbook is kept with each
instrument, and all routine maintenance is recorded. Copies of work rendered under
service contracts are kept in a file. Balances are verified dally and before use with Class
p weights. The Class P working weights are verified against NBS Class S weights on
a monthly basis. Class S weights are sent for verification yearly. Analytical balances
are serviced and calibrated by a certified technician on a yearly basis unless there is
a problem. A delivery check is performed monthly on fixed-volume pipets. The
temperatures of all storage refrigerator/freezers, incubators, ovens, fi faces, and
rater baths are monitored daily. Working thermometers are verifled against an NBS
thermometer every six months. Meters for pli and conductivity are calibrated daily
and before use. Conductivity on the de-ionized water is measured. and the systems
physically examined.on a daily basis.To prevent laboratory contamination,fume hood
velocities are measured monthly. The autoclave is cleaned weekly. with the ldlet
ampule test and cycle tuning performed monthly. All other laboratory equipment is
maintained according to the manufacturers s specifications. Procedures for the
'- washing of laboratory glassware differ from lab to lab and are posted in the applicable
areas.
ALL OF THE ABOVE PROCEDURES ARE DOCUMENTED IN THE APP320PRlATE
LOGBOOK OR ON A DAIA SHEET AFFIXED TO THE EQUIPMENT.
QUAUTY CONTROL
Quality assurance consists of devrJoping and implementing a quality strategy for
lab operations, personnel procedures, and documentation. Quality control, on the
other hand,is the specific tactic to ensure that procedures for analysis follow the desire
strategy. Unless a particular method requires more stringent procedures. CWL follows
• these guidelines:
Method Blanks
Method blanks are prepared and analyzed for every 20 samples or one per batch,
whichever is most frequent. Samples associated with method blanks not meeting
Laboratory standards must be reprepared and reanalyzed. Method blanks for volatile
organics are analyzed every twelve hours.
4
