425 North Union Street
Page 2
During the installation of MW2, field measurements and observations indicated the
presence of petroleum hydrocarbons. The maximum photoionization detector (PID)
measurement recorded was 1088 ppm at 45 feet below ground surface. The laboratory
results do not correlate with field observations, because the results reported were non-
detect for petroleum hydrocarbons. Please provide some explanation as to this
discrepancy. Also, please provide the QA/QC data sheets for laboratory analysis which
was reported. PHS/EHD has repeatedly requested this information in the past and it
should be included in all reports submitted.
The recommendations for further work included the drilling of two additional soil borings
to sample both soil and groundwater to the east and northeast of the former location of
tank #3. PHS/EHD concurs that these soil borings should provide information to
determine the extent of residual soil contamination and may provide further groundwater
quality data. Additional investigation and/or remediation of residual contamination
associated with former tank #4 will also be necessary. Please submit a work plan by
February 15, 1994 for the proposed and requested additional investigation. Also, you
should be aware that quarterly reporting is recognized as a minimum reporting
requirement. The next quarterly monitoring event should be scheduled by January 6,
1994.
If you have any questions, comments, or wish to schedule a site inspection, please contact
Mary Meays, Senior REHS, of my staff at (209) 468-0337.
Jogi Khanna, M.D., M.P.H.
Health Officer
I )
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
DH/MM/425UNION
c: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWQCB
c: Brett Larson, Union Ice 6100 East Sheila Street, L.A.
