SOIL GAS ANALySIg
Oft
Soil gas analysis is a highly effective, non-disruptive method for
:electing, identifying, and defining the axtent of surbsurface
contamination. By measuring the volatile components migrating to
the surface above the area of contamination, the source area, plume
extent and areas of high concentration can be determined. The main
advantage of this approach to site investigations is that P. much
more thorough evarust.ion can be made at a lower cost and with far
less disturbance than drilling or the digging of test pits.
Using a sm811-volume steel probe, soil gas samples are colelctcd
from shallow depths, determined by site conditions but usually 1
q< meter. These samples are sealed under pressure in metal viale or
on collectors and delivered to the Iaboratory. The appropriate
an are performed using highly sensitive gas chromatographs
equipped with electron capture, flame ionization, or photo
ionization detectors. When detailed chemical speciation information
is required for identification of the contaminants, evaluation of
-Pollutant attenuation or determination of the contaminant
contribution from multiple sources, the analysis may use all of
these detectors. Our analytical procedures are capable of
detecting, from soil gas samples, the occurrence of most volatile
organics in the groundwater at concentrations as low as 10 parts
per trillion to 10 parts per billion depending upon the volatile
 e- ae ectot'.
