1
3.0 GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
' On April 25 and 26, 1995, groundwater samples were collected from monitor Wells
MW-1 through MW-5 Each well was purged of approximately 3 well-casing volumes using a
clean Teflon® bailer The purge water was collected and placed into a labeled DOT approved
' 55-gallon storage drum The purge bailer was thoroughly cleaned with Alconox and triple
rinsed with distilled water prior to its use in each well
After purging each well of three well casing volumes of water, a groundwater sample
was collected from each well using a disposable polyethylene bailer The samples were
carefully poured from the bailer into two 40 ml glass vials (VOA vials) and two 1 liter amber
glass bottles The sample bottles were labeled, recorded on a chain-of-custody form, and
' stored in a chilled ice chest for transportation to American Environmental Network (AEN - a
State certified analytical laboratory) A travel blank was prepared using distilled water to
' evaluate potential sample contamination Transport and handling of samples were performed
under strict chain-of-custody protocol The groundwater analytical data sheets and chain-of-
custody records are included as Appendix A
' The groundwater samples were analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total
xylenes (BTEX) and purgeable Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) using EPA Methods 602
' and 5030, respectively, and extractable TPH using EPA Method 3510 The travel blank was
analyzed for BTEX Results of the historical and recent groundwater chemical analyses are
' presented in Table 2 and shown on Figure 3
4.0 DISCUSSION OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY
Groundwater samples collected from Well MW-2 continued to yield the highest
' concentrations detected at the site Table 2 shows that the compounds detected in the
sample collected from MW-2 gasoline range TPH (TPH-g = 0 9 mg/L), kerosene range TPH
' (TPH-k = 0 2 mg/L), benzene (31 µg/L), toluene (3 µg/L), ethylbenzene (40 pg/L), and total
xylenes (13 µg/L) The detected concentrations indicate a small decrease since February
' 1995 for TPH-g, TPH-d (non-detect in April 1995), benzene, toluene and ethylbenzene, and a
minor increase in the observed concentrations of TPH-k and ethylbenzene
 2
