E9
UNION ICE COMPANY
' a25 North Union Street, Stockton, CA
Phase H Site Assessment - Report of Findings EE
1.0 PROJECT HISTORY
Work at the site was initiated in August, 1989, when four (4) underground storage
tanks were located on the.property..jThes-e we e"die iignared tanks#' through #4: Tanks
Wa'nnd #2 were 10,000 gallon fueLtanks.that.had been filled with water by Union Ice
su netime-in--the-past' Tank #3 was-'a 500 galloon tank that had contained both gasoline
an- Teither fuel oil or diesel fuel;tank#4 was a 25-0 gallon"tank that Uontained"waste-'oil"
n
In September of 1989, these tanks were removed by-SL-MCO, under permit, and with
the direction of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division personnel, and
disposed of according to law.
After the tanks were removed, soil samples were taken from beneath all of the tanks. It
was found that tanks #1 and #2 had not leaked; however, tank #4 had either leaked, or .
had been overfilled. Nevertheless, a sail sample taken approximately five feet (5')
below the bottom of tank #4 shows "none detected", indicating that the contamination
was limited in extent. Tank #3 had also leaked and a proposal was submitted to the San
Joaquin County Health Department to excavate the contaminated soil. This proposal 3a
was accepted and the soil was excavated between January 18 and 24, 1990. Approxi- r
mately 550 yards of soil, which resulted from this work, was taken to the Union ice a`
facility at 1320 W. Weber Avenue and remediated at that site.
Work at the Union Street facility was carried out during the period of January 13
through the 21st, 1992.
rt-
2.0 SCOPE & SUMMARY OF PRESENT WORK
The present phase of work was designed to determine the vertical extent of soil contam-
ination in the vicinity of tanks #3 and #4, which were known to have leaked. Further-
more, one of the borings was to be completed as a monitoring well. to establish the
groundwater table at the site and check for possible contamination.
s
The work was carried out between January 14 and 21, 1992. One (1) soil boring was
i drilled to a depth of 35 feet through the location of tank #4. A second boring was
started through the tank #3 excavation, but it had to be abandoned at ten feet due to
caging of the pea gravel used as backfill.. A third boring was then drilled approximately ;
a
ii
'i
