INC
benzene and leukemia The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) recommended eight hour level for benzene is 1 mg/kg NIOSH has
recommended lowering exposure limits to the lowest level which could be reliably
measured because it is not possible to establish a safe level for a carcinogen
i
Gasoline also contains lead which has adverse health effects if inhaled The OSHA TWA
for lead is 50 micrograms per cubic meter, however, lead is not readily volatilized The
overall TLV for gasoline is 300 mglkg, based largely upon assumptions about the
hydrocarbon content of gasoline This TLV could result in benzene exposures of 3 to 7 5
mg/kg depending on the benzene content If the gasoline TLV were lowered to 25 mg/kg,
it would result in benzene exposures of 0 25 to 0 6 mg/kg Lowering the TLV is also
supported in the documentation for the TLV if operations involve a gasoline spill rather
than the normal bulk handling operations This is because vaporization will change the
relative composition of the constituents of gasoline
3.3 Environmental Impacts
Potential impacts of the benzene component of gasoline fuel concentrations in soil at the
Hi Hopes property to local groundwater were judged to be present prior to the initiation of
this investigation The depth and extent of the hydrocarbon impacted soil were not known
prior to the initiation of this investigation and as a consequence could have presented a
threat to local groundwater degradation since all drinking water in the Lodi area is provided
by groundwater source
Four groundwater wells were determined to be present on the Hi Hopes site These wells
include the current domestic water supply well, a former domestic water supply well now
idle, a deep agriculture irrigation well that currently supplies water to the vineyard, and a
former agriculture water supply well associated with a cistern Significant data known
about these wells is presented as Table 1
• 08220010 011 22
