Ms.Jessica Hardy
October 25, 2000
Page 3
The groundwater sample collected from well BC-10 was placed on ice and submitted
under chain-of-custody documentation to Curtis &Tompkins, Ltd.,Berkeley,
California. This sample was analyzed for volatile halogenated hydrocarbons using
United States Environmental Protection Agency Method 8260B. Groundwater in well
BC-10 was determined to contain 20 micrograms per liter (µg/L) chloroform and 1.3
pg/L trichlorofluoromethane. A copy of the Curtis &Tompkins laboratory report is
included as Attachment B.
Well BC-11 was located and its condition was assessed. The top of the PVC casing
was located approximately 14 inches below grade. The casing was found to be
significantly damaged based on visual observation. Attempts to measure the total
depth of well BC-11 failed because accumulated debris and dirt at 23.98 feet bgs
plugged the casing. Standing groundwater was not detected in well BC-11. Anew
well box was placed on the top of BC-11 to protect what remains of the well and
casing.
Work Plan for Destruction of Well BC-11
Brown and Caldwell recommends that well BC-11 be destroyed because it has been
damaged beyond repair, it is a potential conduit to groundwater, and it is no longer
useful as a monitoring point at the former GP site.
We propose that a drilling contractor be retained to properly destroy well BC-11 per
San Joaquin County guidelines. A well destruction permit will be submitted before the
well is destroyed. Because the well is located near or on West Side Irrigation District
property,we will also notify the Irrigation District. Additionally, Underground Service
Alert will be contacted before drilling begins.
The well and casing will be entirely drilled out. The remaining hole will be filled with
neat cement using a tremie pipe to within 1 feet of the surface. During cementing,
pressure will be applied for a sufficient amount of time to ensure that the cement has
set. After the well has been removed and the hole filled, a well destruction form will
be completed and sent to the San Joaquin County Department of Environmental
Health. Additionally, a well completion report will be submitted to the California
Department of Water Resources. With the permission of the City of Tracy, the soil
that is removed will be spread on an adjacent property owned by the City of Tracy.
1025/00 on M420\lata,\18420-002\well localmn I.doc9g/bd
