3 . HAZARDOUS WASTE GENERATOR CLASSIFICATION & OPERATOR <br /> REQUIREMENTS <br /> 3 . 1 . WHAT IS A HAZARDOUS WASTE ? <br /> Waste is considered a hazardous waste based on properties that make it <br /> potentially dangerous or harmful to human health or the environment . It can <br /> be a liquid, solid, contained gases, or discarded unused commercial product, <br /> or discarded used material . <br /> Waste is considered hazardous if it shows one or more of the following <br /> characteristics : <br /> • Ignitable : Easily catches on fire . Examples include : liquid disinfectant <br /> sprays, drain cleaners, pesticides, charcoal lighter fluid . <br /> 4 <br /> • Corrosive : Causes deterioration, etching, or eating away of body <br /> tissue and other surfaces that it touches . Examples include : bleach, <br /> oven cleaners . <br /> • Toxic : Poisonous and may cause injury or death if swallowed, <br /> inhaled, or absorbed through the skin .
