The result of
the feasibility study is that vapor extraction (VES) with air sparging (AIS) will be
the preferred treatment method to use at this site. The estimated time for
treatment is 2 years. The total cost is estimated to be $100K to $200K annually
for a period of 2 years. VES/AIS will remediate both soil and groundwater
contamination.
Evaluation of other less favorable methodologies is as follows
1) Excavation is estimated to cost $125K to $175K to remove contaminated
soil. This method will not mitigate contaminated groundwater.
2) In-situ bioremediation of soil and groundwater is estimated to cost $185K
to $265K for 3 years and involves introduction of a bacterial culture to the
subsurface, which may have unknown consequences and is therefore not
favorable from a regulatory perspective.
3) Natural attenuation has an unknown cost associated with it because the
time to reach applicable cleanup levels is perceived to be many years
based on the concentration and size of this plume. The cost of natural
attenuation is calculated by multiplying the cost of annual monitoring by the
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
