. 11 April 2001
AGE-NC Project No 95-0143
' 2 2 COLLECTION OF GROUND WATER SAMPLES
Water samples were collected from each purged well using new, disposable bailers and, upon
' retrieval,were transferred into 40-m1 EPA-approved VOA vials containing 0 5 ml 18%hydrochloric
acid as a sample preservative The samples were labeled and transported under chain-of-custody, in
a chilled container, to McCampbell Analytical, Inc (MAI), a DHS-certified laboratory, and were
analyzed for
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quatified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Methods 5030/8015m,
• Volatile aromatic hydrocarbons - benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX)
' in accordance with EPA Method 80201602, and
• Fuel oxygenates di-isopropyl ether(DIPS),ethyl tertiary-butyl ether(ETBE),methyl tertiary
' butyl ether (MTBE), tertiary-amyl methyl ether (TAME) and tertiary butanol (TBA) in
accordance with EPA Method 8260M
• Ethylene dibromide (EDB) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) in accordance with EPA
10 Method 8260
1 23 SVE/IAS UNITS OPERATION AND MONITORING
' The sparging system was shut down on 27 October 2000 as part of pulse-mode operation The air '
sparging system remains off due to changes in hydrogeologic conditions at the site Increased ground
water elevations at the site have greatly reduced the available vadose zone, thereby hrriiting the
' effectivness of the vapor extraction system. In order to prevent lateral migration of the contaminant
plume caused by air sparging, the system was shut down The system is anticipated to remain offline
until modifications proposed in AGE's Remedial Action Work Plan Addendum - February 2001,
' dated 26 February 2001, can be completed
The SVE system utilized a catalytic systernwiththe operational temperature maintained above 600'F
until 27 November 2000, at which time the catalytic system was shut down due to a significant
decrease in hydrocarbon concentrations drawn from the vadose zone The blower continued to
' operate for removal of residual contaminant vapor through 27 February 2001, at which time it was
shut down with PHS-EHD approval During operation of the catalytic system, the burner
temperature, exhaust temperature and LEL were continually recorded on a chart recorder
' Field measurement of flow, vacuum potential and organic vapor concentration in the air stream from
each extraction well were measured on a periodic basis (Table 7) Soil vapor samples were collected
1
Advanced GeoEnvironmentai,Inc
1
