MAR. —30' 9S(THU) 1b: 17 Nl►LTE & ASMI, SA( Tc) TEL:916 641 9222 P 000
Mr. Jim Hamrick
July 14, 1994
Page 4
The well log for the plant water supply indicates alternating clay and sand layers followed by
alternating gravel and clay layers to 575 ft (Appendix Q. A number of thick clay layers
exist from 36 ft to 139 ft (103 rt), 192 ft to 267 ft (75 ft), 356 ft to 386 ft (30 ft) and from,
389 ft to 441 ft (52 ft). Water bearing zones have been identified at 167 ft and at 440 ft.
Conversations with well drillers familiar with the area suggest a shallow perched water zone,
but depth of this water zone is unavailable. These shallow water zones are usually not used
for drinking or irrigation water because of poor quality. Thus, the first water bearing zone
beneath the Owens-Brockway Glass Containers facility could range from 10 ft to about 170
ft.
The plant water supply well draws water from a deep aquifer from 440 to 530 ft. An
analysis of the plant water supply is presented in Table I. Based on the analysis, the plant
water supply is classified as very hard, and shows elevated levels of total dissolved solids
(TDS) and specific conductance (E.C.).
Historical ground water movement in the City of Tracy area is in the northern direction.
Ground water movement has been based on San Joaquin County Flood Control and Water
Conservation District "mines of Equal Elevation of Water in Wells" maps. Figure 2
illustrates ground water movement around the area of the Owens-Brockway facility. Local
variations in the ground water movement direction is possible due to the influence of pumping
of water and irrigation wells. Depth to ground water levels for the area west of'the City of
Tracy is unavailable.
Land Uses
A field investigation of the area surrounding the facility was conducted in May, 1994, Land
uses observed included vacant land to the west of the facility. This area was once used as an
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) tracking station and is currently owned by the
California Department of Corrections, Land uses observed east and south of the facility are
for agricultural purposes including alfalfa, sugar beets and tomatoes. To the north of the
facility is a Biomass Recovery Facility. The Biomass Recovery Facility collects wood, wood
by-products and scrap from agricultural facilities around the Tracy area and uses this material
as a fuel to produce steam. The steam is used to generate electrical power which is sold to
the local electrical utility.
Wastewater Characteristic
Wastewater characteristics are based on a grab sample taken from Wastewater Evaporation
Pond No. 1. An analysis of the wastewater is presented in Table 2. Based on the analysis,
n
NOI T!•..R 45YJr L1TEf Int.
