b) The elevated concentrations of oil and grease are due to leakage of
the residual oil into the soil during pipeline removal. It is quite possible
that a small amount of oil still remained in the pipe and spilled out when
the pipe was removed post 1940.
c) The elevated concentrations of oil and grease are due to the tar-like
wrapping used to cover the pipe. It is possible that long term irrigation
and rain waters coming in contact with the tar wrap remaining in the
ground leached hydrocarbons into the immediate soil surrounding the
former pipeline.
The afore-mentioned scenarios are merely speculations made by ASE and
cannot be viewed as fact. ASE recommends the following:
I ) Send the most contaminated sample (Pipe Location E) to Friedman
and Bruya, Inc. (F&B), a laboratory specializing in petroleum hydrocarbon
fingerprinting. F&B may be able to determine if the contamination is a
result of the bunker "c" and/or crude oil or from the tar-like wrap used
to coat the pipe.
2) Notify the local regulatory agency with a copy of this report.
