December 30, 1997
Mrs. M.E. Hanson
1342 Lincoln Blvd.
Tracy, California 95361
To Whom It May Concern,
In hopes of clarification concerning the removal of the diesel fuel tank on the C.W. Peterson
walnut ranch, we are attempting to provide the necessary date to assure you that said tank was
removed prior to 1985, the date the county required permits to be attained for removal.
During the year of 1977, Mr. Frank Hill took over the major responsibilities of farming the
acreage because the task was proving too much for my father, C.W. Peterson. Up until this time,
"Pete"had done the majority of the caretaking himself, with the help of other family members,
around harvest time. C.W. owned one gasoline powered small tractor and one diesel fueled
caterpillar. Since the tractors were no longer to be used in the farming operations, the smaller one
was given to Elizabeth Hanson Barnes, my daughter, who still owns it, and the diesel caterpillar,
that used fuel from the underground tank was sold. Frank Hill, who took over the farming, had
his own farm equipment and fuel source.
During the late fall of 1978, the decision was made to remove the unneeded underground fuel
tank. Manuel Pimentel, was recommended and employed to do this work. Witnessing the
removal were the following persons- Manuel Pimentel, Verner Hanson, Maxine Hanson and C.W.
Peterson and Eric Potter, the renter of the farmhouse on the property. When the tank was
removed, Mr. Pimentel carefully inspected the underlying soil as well as the fuel tank, itself.
Absolutely no leakage was detected, a fact we were all very pleased to learn. The fuel tank itself
was a 300 gallon tank, so the excavation was not a major project.
Over the next few years, many events took place, one, being that C. W. Peterson was
hospitalized in 1980 until his death in 1987. Mr. Dominique took over the farming of the orchard
from Frank Hill, until his untimely death in 1984. At this time, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Etchevery
and their son, Mike contracted to farm and harvest the walnuts and have continued to do so until
the present time. When Mr. Mike Etchevery began the work, in 1985, he stated that the diesel
tank had long since been removed.
I hope this letter gives you a time frame clarification, so we may proceed with the business at
hand.
Sincerely yours
Ll6i r
Maxine E.
