k'■ KLEINFELDER
File No.: 20-3121-02
November 2, 1988
Page 6
With these provisions, we recommend a maximum allowable bearing pressure of 2,000
'3 pounds per square foot for dead plus live load be used in design. This value can be
increased by one-third for the total of all loads, including wind or seismic forces. The
recommended minimum width of foundations is 12 inches. The anticipated total
settlement is less than 1/4-inch. The majority of this settlement should occur during
construction as building loads are placed.
Ii it is desired to use a higher bearing value, we recommend the structure be
supported on a minimum of 2 feet of Engineered Fill beneath foundations. This will
require overexcavation and recompaction of approximately 3 to 4 feet of the existing
fill pad. With this provision, the recommended maximum bearing value can be
• increased to 3,500 pounds per square foot for dead plus live load with a 1/3 increase
for the total of all loads. With foundations supported entirely on Engineered Fill,
._ . settlement will be reduced.
We recommend that the reinforcing design of the footings be provided by the
structural engineer. We note that the above-stated bearing value is a net value and
the weight of concrete in the portion of the foundations which extends below grade
can be neglected in proportioning the foundations.
It is recommended that all footing trenches on this project be observed by a
,., representative of our firm prior to placement of reinforcing steel. The purpose of
T
these observations is to verify that the bearing soils actually encountered in the
j
footing excavations are the same as those on which our recommendations are based,
and to observe any loose pockets of soil or debris.
1
,a
a
