State of California—California Environmental Protectio cy Department of Toxic Substances Control
PROJEC i`IONS
10your 2002 SB 14 Plan or Compliance Checklist has this information:
(25) Provide the following information for this waste stream:
How much waste was generated in the 2002 year? 21075 pounds
Describe the source reduction measure(s)selected to be implemented by 2006(add page if needed):
Preventative Maintenance
Preventative maintenance on clarifiers (oil/water separators) is performed on a scheduled basis. Preventative
maintenance includes inspections of equipment following each tank cleaning (pump out). The inspections will
consist of a thorough examination of equipment for cracks, leaks in piping, rusting, or oxidized surfaces. These
inspections will reduce the amount of waste generated from spills and leaks. In addition, each department should
establish a schedule and procedures for prompt maintenance and repair of equipment and systems when
problems are noted during an inspection.
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
SOPs will be developed and implemented by for painting operations, vehicle maintenance and washing, and
building maintenance. SOPS will be developed with the intent of reducing the amount of waste generated from
operations discharging water into the oil water separator. Managers/Supervisors will be responsible for the
development and implementation of the procedures. Review and assessment of SOPs for each department will
occur annually.
Tank Cleaning
Facility Services will decrease the frequency of cleaning (pumping out) the clarifier tanks for the steam pit and bus
wash to once a year. Large volumes of water are pumped from the tanks during the process of removing sludge
from the tanks. By decreasing the frequency of the pumpouts, the amount of oily water waste generated will be
reduced.
Training
Training provided for department managers and painting operations staff will focus on job specific techniques and
safety requirements. In particular, painters will be trained on estimating and ordering the amount of paint needed
for a project and receive guidance regarding which preferred products to order to complete the project. SOPS will
require that the current supply of painting materials be checked prior to the ordering new materials.
Specific Job Training for Steam Pit and Bus Wash Operators
Training provided for department managers and vehicle repair staff will focus on job specific techniques and safety
requirements. Steam pit operators should be trained on the location of the designated wash area, how the
washing system operates, washing techniques, waste reduction measures and elimination of overspray from
leaving containment area.
Estimate when this source reduction measure will be implemented: June month 2005 year
What is the annual projected source reduction quantity identified in the 2002 Plan? 1054 pounds per year
DTSC 1262
