Lesson Title About Pep Boys Screen —F-4.
Learning Unit A Brief History of Pep Boys
Title
Imacie Audio
MMJ Logo
Content Block. Sidebar
Yes, there really were three people named Manny, Moe and Jack.
In 1921, Maurice L. (Moe) Strauss, Emanuel (Manny) Rosenfeld and N.
Graham (Jack) Jackson opened the first Pep Auto Supplies store in
Philadelphia, PA.
They took the original name from a product carried in the store, called Pep
Valve Grinding Compound.
A neighborhood cop may have led to the name change to Pep Boys. As the
story goes, every time he stopped a car that didn't have an oil wick burning,
he would tell the driver to go see "the boys down at Pep."
The "Manny, Moe and Jack" portion of the name was added after Moe visited
California in 1923 and saw a dress shop called Minnie, Maude and Mabel's!
Act=
Flash #1 Zoom (No Header)
Q: So what's an oil wick, anyway? A: Back in 1921 many -vehicles didn't have electric headlights. They carried oil
lamps, which had a wick that was burned. These were the early car lights.
5
