UPPER MORMON SLOUGH FLOWS SOME YEARS AGO WERE DIVERTED THROUGH <br /> THE STOCKTON DIVERTING CANAL NORTHERLY TO THE CALAVERAS RIVER TO EASE FLOODING CON- <br /> DITIONS. THE POINT OF DIVERSION IS ABOUT 7 MILES ABOVE THE MOUTH OF THE SLOUGH. THE <br /> DRAINAGE BASIN OF LOWER MORMON SLOUGH IS POORLY DEFINED, BUT IT APPEARS TO CONTAIN <br /> 6 TO 8 SQUARE MILES, INCLUDING A LARGE PORTION OF THE CITY OF STOCKTON. FLOW RECORDS <br /> ARE NOT AVAILABLE, BUT GENERALLY SPEAKING THERE IS NO SIGNIFICANT NET DOWNSTREAM <br /> FLOW EXCEPT DURING RAINY PERIODS. TIDAL ACTION IS THEREFORE THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT <br /> WATER MOVEMENT DURING MOST OF THE YEAR. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 1,00,000 FT OF WATER <br /> MOVES IN AND OUT DURING ONE TIDE PHASE, OR ABOUT 2,800,000 FT3 EACH WAY PER DAY. <br /> MORMON SLOUGH SUPPORTS A WARM WATER FISHERY INCLUDING CARP, CATFISH, SUNFISH, <br /> AND BASS, <br /> THE ONLY INDUSTRIAL WATER USE OF MORMON SLOUGH IS BY MCCORMICK AND BAXTER FOR <br /> COOLING WATER PURPOSES. <br /> WASTE DISCHARGES INTO THE SLOUGH INCLUDE COOLING WATER DISCHARGES BY MCCORMICK <br /> AND BAXTER, AND BY FIBREBOARD INTO MCDONALD CANAL, A TRIBUTARY TO MORMON SLOUGH. <br /> THE ONLY OTHER DISCHARGES KNOWN ARE STORM WATER DRAINS. <br /> THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES IS OF THE OPINION THAT MORMON SLOUGH FEEDS THE <br /> UPPER STRATA OF GROUND WATER IN THIS AREA, <br /> BEING A TIDAL BODY OF WATER CONNECTING TO THE UPPER END OF THE TURNING BASIN, <br /> MORMON SLOUGH AND STOCKTON PORT WATERS ARE THOROUGHLY INTERMINGLED. THEREFORE DELE- <br /> TERIOUS MATERIALS IN MORMON SLOUGH WOULD HAVE AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON THE PORT WATERS, <br /> AND VICE VERSA. <br /> WITHIN THE NEXT FEW YEARS THE WESTSIDE FREEWAY WILL BE CONSTRUCTED THROUGH THIS <br /> VICINITY. REPORTEDLY IT WILL PASS THROUGH THE EAST EDGE OF THE MCCORMICK AND BAXTER <br /> PROPERTY. MORMON SLOUGH WILL BE FILLED IN FOR THE FREEWAY CROSSING, AND DRAINAGE <br /> WILL BE DIVERTED THROUGH A CANAL NORTHERLY TO THE UPPER PORT AREA. <br /> WATER QUALITY CONSIDERATIONS <br /> TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF THE CREOSOTE LOG RAFTS ON WATER QUALITY IN MORMON <br /> SLOUGH, SAMPLES WERE TAKEN AT 3 LOCATIONS AT 3 VERTICAL LEVELS (SURFACE, NEAR THE <br /> BOTTOM, AND BOTTOM MUD), FOR A TOTAL OF 9 SAMPLES. THE LOCATIONS WERE AT THE MOUTH <br /> OF MORMON SLOUGH, AT THE LOG RAFTS, AND ABOUT 100 FEET ABOVE THE LOG RAFTS NEAR THE <br /> FAR BANK. WATER QUALITY PARAMETERS ANALYZED WERE PHENOLS, OIL, HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM, <br /> ARSENIC, ZINC, AND COPPER. THE RAW DATA FOLLOWS, WITH ALL FIGURES IN MILLIGRAMS <br /> PER LITER. <br />
