Hazardous Waste
Overview All areas of a CVS/pharmacy store (Front Store, Photo, and Pharmacy) may
generate waste items through normal business operations that are regulated
r:.;. as hazardous waste. Due to federal and state regulations, these items
cannot be disposed of in the trash, dumpster, sinks, toilets, or down the
drains. Hazardous waste items must be disposed of by using a hazardous
waste collection program.
CVS/pharmacy has contracted with StrongPak, a licensed hazardous waste
company, to properly transport and dispose of hazardous waste generated
by CVS/pharmacy stores. StrongPak's licensed technicians transport
hazardous waste from the store to a licensed disposal facility.
NOTE: Hazardous waste discussed in this training does not include the
management of Sharps or other bio -hazardous wastes. These wastes are
not included in this program.
Pharmacy There are many pharmacy waste items that may be considered hazardous
Hazardous waste when disposed. These items must be collected and managed using
Waste the "PHARMACY" hazardous waste collection container. The types of items
covered in this training are:
• Loose pills (non -controlled).
• Empty closed containers (stock bottles and amber prescription vials)
that once contained pharmaceuticals in the Warfarin -family (e.g.,
Coumadin, Jantoven, Panwarfarin, Lonamin) and Phentermine.
• Materials used for spill cleanup that are contaminated with
pharmaceuticals, such as gloves and paper towels (NO blood borne
waste).
• Materials used to clean compounding equipment and utensils that are
contaminated with pharmaceuticals. This includes items such as
alcohol wipes and paper towels.
• Trace chemotherapy waste, including all packaging, cotton balls,
gloves, and wipes contaminated with chemotherapeutic agents.
• Used flu vaccine vials.
• Unwanted compounding chemicals.
• Non -controlled pharmaceutical materials that do not have any value
(e.g., containers that you can't empty, undispensed compounds).
© CVS/pharmacy 4
CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS INFORMATION
CVS000010403
