Pharmacy Hazardous Waste Disposal <br />Overview There are pharmacy waste materials that require specific handling due to the <br />nature of the waste materials. The next few sections will discuss how to <br />properly handle each of these pharmacy waste materials. <br />Loose Pills All non -controlled loose pills must be managed through the Pharmacy <br />Hazardous Waste Management Program. <br />When you drop a non -controlled pill or find a loose non -controlled pill, you <br />must: <br />NOTE: When a significant quantity of one medication is added to the <br />StrongPak "PHARMACY" container, you must cycle count the medication to <br />ensure replenishment. <br />If you have previously collected loose pills, you must: <br />Confirm that the loose pill is not a controlled substance, as <br />1 <br />controlled substances are not managed through this program <br />(follow normal return procedures for controlled substance returns). <br />1 <br />Identify any Warfarin -family pills (e.g., Coumadin, Jantoven, <br />2 <br />NOTE: If more than one of the same pill is dropped/found at one <br />time, the pills may be collected together (but kept separate from <br />3 <br />other loose pills). <br />2 <br />Place pill in amber vial or StrongPak self-sealing bag. <br />3 <br />Label packaging with the NDC or name of the pill. <br />4 <br />Seal the bag or close the amber vial completely. <br />5 <br />Place sealed packaging in the StrongPak "PHARMACY' container. <br />NOTE: When a significant quantity of one medication is added to the <br />StrongPak "PHARMACY" container, you must cycle count the medication to <br />ensure replenishment. <br />If you have previously collected loose pills, you must: <br />Continued on next page <br />© CVS/pharmacy 7 <br />FM <br />CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS INFORMATION <br />CVS000010406 <br />Separate out any controlled substances, as they are not managed <br />1 <br />through this program (follow normal return procedures for <br />controlled substance returns). <br />Identify any Warfarin -family pills (e.g., Coumadin, Jantoven, <br />2 <br />Panwarfarin, Lonamin), place them in a separate amber vial and <br />label as "Warfarin." <br />3 <br />Place any remaining pills in an amber vial or StrongPak self-sealing <br />bag and label as "Dropped Pills." <br />4 <br />Seal the bag or close the amber vial completely. <br />5 <br />Place sealed packaging in the StrongPak "PHARMACY" container. <br />Continued on next page <br />© CVS/pharmacy 7 <br />FM <br />CONFIDENTIAL BUSINESS INFORMATION <br />CVS000010406 <br />
