Ms. Pam Violet from San Joaquin County Public Health
Services, Environmental Health Division, was on site during soil sampling activities.
The ends of the brass liners were immediately covered with Teflon tape; capped with plastic
endcaps; labeled with sample tags identifying the sample number, date, location, name of sampler,
and sample depth; placed in waterproof, air tight resealable bags; and stored in a cooler containing
ice. Chain -of -custody forms were filled out for both sampling events. Chain -of -custody forms
include name of sampler, laboratory name, requested analyses, date, time and location of each
sample, and signatures for each relinquishment. Chain -of -custody forms are included in Appendix C.
All samples were couriered to Compu Chem Western Division of Sacramento, California.
Additional samples, NCS -1A and NCS -2A, were collected from stockpiled soils and held by the
laboratory at the request of San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health
Division. With the approval of Diane Henson of San Joaquin County, these samples were not
analyzed because a clean closure of the tank pit would not occur. Ground water was not encountered
during UST removal; therefore, water samples were not collected. The product delivery pipe trench
was left open until soil sample NCS -5 could be collected in the presence of Ms. Pam Violet from San
Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division, on April 24, 1992.
Due to the relative certainty of historic storage of leaded gasoline in tank 81713-2, requested
analyses of the soil samples collected during tank removal operations were total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline using Department of Health Services, Leaking Underground Fuel
Tank Gas Chromatograph -Flame Ionization Detector (DHS LUFT GC -FID) methods; benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes using United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
method 8020; ethylene dibromide using EPA method 8010; organic lead using DHS LUFT and EPA
method 7420; and total lead using EPA method 6010.
Backfilling
After completion of sampling, the excavation pit was backfilled on April 21 and 22, 1992,
with imported fill in accordance with the Tank Closure Plan, dated January 30, 1992 (Appendix A,
Photo 8). Fill material was compacted with a sheep's foot roller. Backfilling and surface restoration
operations were completed on April 24, 1992.
