(Geofon) has prepared this correspondence on behalf of the Sharpe Site
Environmental Management Office and the United States Army Corps of Engineers
(USACE), to request permanent closure of underground storage tanks (USTs) at Building
330, Lathrop, California.
Two 2,000 -gallon USTs were removed at the Building 303 site on 11 June 2001, in
accordance with San Joaquin County Environmental Health Services Department (SJC-
EHD) requirements for permanent closure of underground hazardous substance storage
tanks. Geofon rinsed and inerted the USTs and associated piping prior to removal.
Evergreen Environmental transported the tank rinsate along with hazardous waste
manifests to the Evergreen Oil Inc. facility in Newark, California for recycling. Ecology
Control Industry (ECI) transported the tanks along with hazardous -waste manifests to
their facility in Fontana, California. The tank appurtenances and piping were transported
to Lovelace Materials Recovery and Transfer Station in Lathrop, California for disposal.
Waste concrete and asphalt were taken to FTG Construction Materials, Inc., in Lodi for
recycling. Subsequently, ECI transported the USTs to American Metal Recycling for
disposal/recycling. Following the removal of tanks and pipes, Geofon collected soil
samples from the UST excavation pit, pipe trenches, beneath the dispensers, and soil
stockpile. The enclosed Underground Storage Tank Closure Report summarizes the
activity and procedures employed by Geofon during the removal of the USTs
Soil samples collected during the tank removal from underneath the pipeline locations
(PL -1 and PL -2), samples collected from under the hold down slab (T-1 (SE), T-2 (SE
center), T-3 (NE), T-4 (SW), T-5 (SW center) and T-6 (NW)), and samples collected
from the stockpile soil/pea-gravel mix (SP -1 (W), SP -2 (E), SP -3 (W), SP -4 (E), SP -5 (E)
and SP -6 (W)) did not contain TPH-D, BTEX, or MTBE above laboratory method
detection limits.
