(Geofon) has prepared this correspondence on behalf of the Sharpe Site <br />Environmental Management Office and the United States Army Corps of Engineers <br />(USACE), to request permanent closure of underground storage tanks (USTs) at Building <br />330, Lathrop, California. <br />Two 2,000 -gallon USTs were removed at the Building 303 site on 11 June 2001, in <br />accordance with San Joaquin County Environmental Health Services Department (SJC- <br />EHD) requirements for permanent closure of underground hazardous substance storage <br />tanks. Geofon rinsed and inerted the USTs and associated piping prior to removal. <br />Evergreen Environmental transported the tank rinsate along with hazardous waste <br />manifests to the Evergreen Oil Inc. facility in Newark, California for recycling. Ecology <br />Control Industry (ECI) transported the tanks along with hazardous -waste manifests to <br />their facility in Fontana, California. The tank appurtenances and piping were transported <br />to Lovelace Materials Recovery and Transfer Station in Lathrop, California for disposal. <br />Waste concrete and asphalt were taken to FTG Construction Materials, Inc., in Lodi for <br />recycling. Subsequently, ECI transported the USTs to American Metal Recycling for <br />disposal/recycling. Following the removal of tanks and pipes, Geofon collected soil <br />samples from the UST excavation pit, pipe trenches, beneath the dispensers, and soil <br />stockpile. The enclosed Underground Storage Tank Closure Report summarizes the <br />activity and procedures employed by Geofon during the removal of the USTs <br />Soil samples collected during the tank removal from underneath the pipeline locations <br />(PL -1 and PL -2), samples collected from under the hold down slab (T-1 (SE), T-2 (SE <br />center), T-3 (NE), T-4 (SW), T-5 (SW center) and T-6 (NW)), and samples collected <br />from the stockpile soil/pea-gravel mix (SP -1 (W), SP -2 (E), SP -3 (W), SP -4 (E), SP -5 (E) <br />and SP -6 (W)) did not contain TPH-D, BTEX, or MTBE above laboratory method <br />detection limits. Unknown hydrocarbons in the CIO to C24 range (i.e., diesel range) were <br />detected in soil samples SP -1 (W), SP -2 (E), SP -4 (E), SP -5 (E) and SP -6 (W) at <br />
