INTRODUCTION
This report summarizes the field activities performed at the
former Exxon Station located ,at 601 East Kettleman Lane,
Lodi, California (Figure 1) during the removal of a 500
gallon used oil tank and product piping with dispensers. The
double wall fiberglass Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) for
gasoline and diesel products were left in place to be
reused. Station replacement, excavation and removal
activities were performed by Wendt & Sons Construction of
Stockton, California. Transportion and disposal of the used
oil tank and piping was performed by Ecology Control
Industries (formerly Erickson, Inc.) of Richmond,
California. A Touchstone Developments (Touchstone)
representative was present on-site to observe the used oil
UST and product piping excavations and to obtain soil
samples from the excavations and associated stockpiles. The
soil sampling described in this report was performed April
23, 1998 to comply with current State of California Regional
Water Quality Control Board and San Joaquin County
guidelines.
SITE DESCRIPTION
The former station building and product dispenser islands
has been demolished and a new station is currently being
built. The site is adjacent to commercial businesses.
FIELD EXCAVATION ACTIVITIES
During the upgrading of the station, the gasoline and diesel
product piping was detached fromtheexisting fiberglass
USTs. The fuel USTs remained and the double walled
fiberglass piping was removed to be replaced for the new
station configuration. The 500 gallon double walled
fiberglass used oil tank was also removed. Removal and
sampling occurred April 23, 1998 and was witnessed by
Michael Kith, a representative with San Joaquin County
Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division.
SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples were collected under the direction of Michael
Kith from the backhoe bucket by removing the top few inches
of soil and pushing a clean three -inch -long brass tube (2
inches in diameter) into the soil until completely full.
The ends of each tube were covered with aluminum foil and
sealed with plastic end caps. The sample was then labeled,
placed in a cooler with ice, entered on a Chain -of -Custody
form and transported to Analytical Sciences, a State -
certified analytical laboratory located in Petaluma,
California.
Page 1
