Mobil Product Data Sheet Mobilube@ ' Description Mobilube HD 80W-90 and 85W-140 are multipurpose, heavy-duty, extreme -pressure gear lubricants. They are made with select, specially processed base oils that provide good stability at high temperatures and good performance at low temperatures. The naturally high viscosity index of the base oil, in combination with the sul- phur phosphorous additives, results in products of exceptional chemical and thermal stability. Antiwear and antifric- tion additives control wear, scoring, and frictional power losses. The pro- ducts resist foaming, are compatible with normally used seal and gasket materials, and provide good protection against copper corrosion. Mobilube HD lubricants have demon- strated protection against rust resulting from water contamination and storage in a humid atmosphere by passing the L-33 rust test of MIL -L -2105D. They also improve the cleanliness of high- temperature components and provide seal protection at the Mack GO -H and proposed PG -2 quality levels. Application Mobilube HD gear lubricants are in- tended for initial fill, topping -off, and refill of enclosed automotive gears for manual transmissions, gear cases of semiautomatic transmissions where gear lubricants are recommended, drive axles, and final drives of passen- ger cars, trucks, taxicabs, and con- tractor and farm equipment. They should not be used in automatic trans- missions or semiautomatic transmis- sions for which engine oil or automatic transmission fluid is recommended. The products meet U.S. Military Specification MIL -L -2105D and the requirements of the L-37 and L axle tests. Mobilube 80VWand 85W-140 are fully approved against Mack truck specifications GO -H and GO -G. The lubricants in the Mobilube HD family are recommended for API GL -5 Service, covering hypoid and other gears in passenger cars and other automotive equipment operated under high-speed shock -load, high-speed low -torque, and low -speed high-torque conditions. In general, the EP requirement for transmission gears is less exacting than that for axle gears, particularly hypoid gears. Many transmission man- ufacturers, therefore, recommend using an API CD, SAE 50 heavy-duty engine oil. However, Mobilube HD gear lubricants also are suitable for use in some transmissions where the normal lubricant recommendation is for API GL -5 or a Mack GO -H or pro- posed PG -2 performance product. The exceptional chemical and thermal stability of Mobilube HD lubricants per- mit their use at intermittent bulk oil temperatures up to 149°C (300°F), with realistic drain and refill schedules. Steady operation at temperatures above 260°F is not recommended without careful evaluation of lubricant drain intervals. Mobillube HD gear lubricants are com- pletely satisfactory for either topping -off or entirely refilling most differentials, including limited -slip types. Since the severity level of limited slip differentials can vary appreciably, it may be neces- sary to use a special factory -provided lubricant for those requiring ultimate chatter control. Mobilube HD lubricants are recommended for the Mack truck interaxle power dividers requiring limited -slip additives. They carry the Mack GO -H and GO -G level approvals. Mobilube HD 80-90 has the viscosi- ty/temperature characteristics which enable it to meet the viscosity require- ments of SAE 80W, 85W, and 90 grade products.
