erSchy Environme'ntaF"':'-
56`'
Mr. Michael J. Infurna, Jr.
San Joaquin County
Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division
P. 0. Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
APR 8 1998
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
PERMIT/SERVICES
April 6, 1998
Re: Results of Underground Storage Tank (UST) Assessment, Super Stop Market,
Manteca, California
Dear Mr. Infurna:
HerSchy Environmental is pleased to present the results of the UST assessment at
the above -referenced site. The site is located at 290 North Main Street in Manteca. The
purpose of this work was to investigate soil conditions in the vicinity of and beneath
underground storage tanks (USTs) prior to installation of tank liners. The work consisted
of the hand augering angle borings to collect soil samples from below each end of three
existing 8,000 -gallon USTs used to store gasoline. Six borings (B-1 through B-6) were
drilled to evaluate soil conditions beneath the USTs (Figure 1). Borings B-1, B-2, and B-
6 were drilled to sample beneath the fill ends of the USTs, whereas the remaining borings
were drilled to sample beneath the non -fill ends.
Hand Auaering and Soil Sampling
Drilling was performed using hand operated augering equipment on March 24
and 25, 1998. Because of the relationship between the angle of angering and the shape of
the USTs, samples were collected from a drill depth of approximately 17 feet from each
of the borings drilled at an approximate 45 degree angle. This is equivalent to a vertical
depth of 12 feet, an estimated two to three feet below the base of the USTs. The initial
boring (B-6) was drilled and sampled in the presence of Mr. Michael Infurna, Jr.
representing the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division.
Soil was exposed for hand augering by first removing a small area of asphalt
pavement with an electric demolition hammer. Soil samples were collected using a drive
hammer equipped with brass liners. The samples were collected by driving the sampler
at the base of the hand augered boring. One soil sample was collected from the base of
37771 Berkshire Drive ♦ Madera, CA 93638 ♦ Phone: 209.645.4632 ♦ Fax: 209.645.4632
