0 0
Supplemental Information
The 865-D1U1 tank system was installed in 1982 and is located on the south end
of the west side of Building 865. It supplies diesel fuel to the Building 865 boiler.
The tank system consists of a 4,000-gallon, single-wall FRP underground storage
tank (UST), associated fill pipe, vent pipe, and fuel supply and return piping.
The system was registered with the State Water Resources Control Board in 1986
as 865-11D and has subsequently been renamed 865-D1U1. Figure 1 (see
Appendix B) shows the location of Building 865 at Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory Site 300. Figure 2 shows the location of tank 865-D1U1 with respect to
Building 865. Figure 3 shows the plan view of tank 865-D1U1 showing proposed
soil sample locations. (Note: If a concrete slab is determined to exist below the
underground tank it will be removed, if feasible. If not, soil samples will be
collected below each corner of the concrete slab rather than from below each end
of the tank. The San Joaquin Inspector may request that a sample be collected
from below the center of the tank also.)
UST 865-D1U1 has not leaked according to previous tank testing reports. Recent
test results, for the test performed in March 1994, are included as Appendix C.
They show that the tank and associated underground piping are leak tight.
If soil contamination is discovered, up to 10 cubic yards of contaminated soil may
be removed at the time of the tank removal. Underlying soil will then be
sampled to determine if any contamination remains in the soil. If soil
contamination appears to be more than minor, or if there is an indication of
contaminated groundwater, LLNL will perform further investigation and
cleanup activities in agreement with San Joaquin County Public Health Services.
Contaminated soil will be stored, sampled, and disposed of properly.
The contractor TSDF receiving the tank will cut it up to prevent its re-use as a
tank.
Water samples from the groundwater monitoring wells near 865-D1U1 (see
Figure 4) are not currently analyzed for diesel fuel. If soil contamination is
found, and if there is reason to suspect that the contaminants have migrated
from the area, groundwater samples from the monitoring wells will be analyzed
for diesel fuel. However, groundwater contamination is not expected due to the
tank integrity and the depth to groundwater of approximately 120 feet.
A-1
