Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
'. 3 I Fri 2: 19
March 25, 1994
Mr. Doug Wilson
Public Health Services of San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Division
P. O. Box 2009
Stockton, Ca 95201
Subject: Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized (Leak)/
Contamination Site Report, and Report of a Failed Pressure Test of
Underground Piping,Tank 836-D1U1 at Building 836
Attached is an Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized Release (Leak)/
Contamination Site Report for tank system 836-D1U1 at Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory Site 300.
Underground storage tank 836-D1U1 at Building 836 was a 280 gallon single-wall
carbon steel tank that supplied diesel fuel to the Building 836 standby generator.
On March 11, 1994, the tank system was closed and the tank was removed from the
ground. Soil samples collected from within the excavation and from the soil
removed from the excavation were submitted for analyses of diesel fuel (TPH-D)
and BTXE. On Friday, March 18, we received the results of analyses of these
samples. The sample collected within the excavation at a depth of 82 inches below
the surface showed 69 mg/kg for TPH-D, and 'ND" (not detected) for all four BTEX
analytes. The sample collected from pile of excavated soil and fill showed 1400
mg/kg TPH-D. BTEX analyses showed 'ND" for Benzene, 0.0062 mg/kg for
Toluene, 0.13 mg/kg for Xylene, 0.015 mg/kg for Ethylbenzene.
The Closure Plan for 836-D1U1 specified that soil samples would be collected below
the underground piping as well as from below the underground tank. On March 11
the job-site was not ready for collection of soil samples below the piping. Mr.
Snavely stated that the closure would not be complete until 1.) samples were
collected as prescribed by the Closure Plan and were shown by analyses to be clean
(enough), or 2.) a pressure test was performed on the piping that showed that
piping to be leak tight.
An Equal Opportunity Employer•University of California•P.O.Box 808 Livermore,CA 94551-9900•Telephone(510)422-1100 •Twx 910-386-8339 UCLLL L VMR
