Sample 2. From a depth of 2 ft below the suspected leak site (i.e. ,
below Sample 1) into undisturbed geologic materials.
Samples 3 and 4. From the top of the tank, on the north and south
sides of the connection of the fill bung with the top of the tank.
Samples 5. 6. 7 and 8. From the east and west ends of the tank in the
fill at the base of the original excavation to install the tank, and
from the east and west ends of the tank, 2 ft below the original
excavation to install the tank.
Sample 9. Below the point where the-piping had, at one time,
connected to Bldg.874.
All samples will be collected in brass tubes. The Simco 2800H drill
rig, using the 6-in hollow stem auger and a split tube sampler, will be
used where room permits. Otherwise, either a backhoe with the hollow stem
auger attachment or a hand auger with a drive sampler will be used.
Chain-of-custody procedures will be followed to ensure the integrity
of the samples. An accurate written record will be maintained that can be
used to trace the possession and handling of the sample from the moment of
its collection through analysis.
Any soil found to exceed the proposed limits for TPH and BTX&E will be
removed and disposed of as hazardous waste at the U.S. Pollution Control,
Inc. , Grassy Mountain Facility, in Clive, Utah. Either MP Vacuum Truck
' Service of Bakersfield, Calif. or IT Corporation, of Martinez, Calif. will
transport the contaminated soil.
The tank will be removed and disposed-of pursuant to Sec. 2672 (b) of
the "Underground Tank Regulations." This provision requires that (1) all
contents be removed from the tank, (2) the tank be purged of combustible
vapors, (3) proper disposal of the tank be documented, and (4) the county
be notified of the tank's reuse or salvage. The tank's destination and
' future use will be determined at the time of excavation, after its
condition has been assessed. Prior to shipping, the tank will be purged
of vapor by packing it with 75 lb. of dry ice (1.5 lb/100 gal capacity) .
6
