CLOSURE REPORT FOR UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANKS 879-GlUl&879-G2U1
CLOSURE REPORT CONCLUSIONS:
• Tanks 879-GlUl and 879-G2U1 closure excavating activities on 3/17/94 resulted in a rupture
of the Building 879 city water piping Erickson pumped 5,000-gallons of water from the
excavation into their truck. A water sample was collected for analyses by EPA Method 8260
(Volatile Organics by GC/MS), and for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH). The EPA
Method 8260 analysis showed benzene toluene xylene and ethylbenzene (BTXE) were
present in the sample in concentrations of 1 gg/L or less except toluene at 3.0µg/L. The TPH
analysis showed 2 m—g/L TPH described as "weathered diesel fuel." Results were received
3/23/94. An Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized(Leak)/Contamination Site Report for
the Water Release in Closure Excavation of Tanks 879-GlUl and 879-G2U1 was prepared The
water was then disposed of at Gibson Oil&Refining Company as approximately 5,000 gallons
of non-hazardous liqui<(4/8/94).
• UST 879-GlU1 and 879-G2U1 were closed according to the Closure Plan approved by the San
Joaquin County Public Health Services
• The analytical laboratory, California Laboratory Services reported two samples with
identification numbers differing from those indicated on the Chain-of-Custody. Sample TK-
05-01-879-G1U1-36-SO was reported as TK-03-01-879-G1U1-36-SO and sample TK-06-01-879-
G1Ul-SP-SO-1 was reported as TK-05-01-879-G1U1-SP-SO-1
• The stockpile has not been remediated and is currently awaiting_proper disposal or reuse
• One soil sample collected from the tank excavation resulted in the detection of TPH-D at a
concentration of 27 mg/kg: however, TPH-D was not detected in any other soil samples
collected from the tank excavation BTEX was not detected soil samples collected from the
tank excavation and Total Lead in soil samples collected from the tank excavation ranged
from non-detect to 25 mg/kg These lead levels are characteristic of background Site 300 lead
levels
• At this time LLNL does not1p an any further action for these tank closures
[X] Photographs of tank closure activities are enclosed as Appendix E.
[N/A] A copy of the State Water Resources Control Board UST Permit Application Form B
shall be submitted to your office within 30 days of the submittal of this report.
[N/A] A copy of the State Water Resources Control Board UST Permit Application Form B
was submitted to your office with the UST Closure Plan.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
• As required an Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized (Leak)/Contamination Site Report
for the Water Release in Closure Excavation of Tanks 879-GlU1 and 879-G2U1 was sent to
Mr.Doug Wilson of the Public Health Services of San Joaquin County on March 30, 1994 (see
Avvendix D)
• Weather was cloudy/overcast;varying wind direction.
• Soil compaction was performed as indicated on the Consolidated Engineering Labs Field
Density Report(see Appendix G)
• The certificate of tank destruction is enclosed as Appendix H.
8
