Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
AM
March 30, 1994
Mr. Doug Wilson
Public Health Services of San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Division
P. O. Box 2009
Stockton, Ca 95201
Subject: Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized (Leak)/
Contamination Site Report, Tanks 879-G1U1 and 879-G2U1,
Water Release in Closure Excavation
Attached is an Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized Release (Leak)/
Contamination Site Report for the release of water into the closure excavation for
tanks 879-GlU1 and 879-G2U1 at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Site 300.
On March 17, 1994, excavation to prepare to remove the two 10,000 gallon gasoline
tanks at Building 879 resulted in rupture of the on-site water distribution and
supply system to Building 879. 3000 gallons of water were pumped from the
excavation. A water sample was collected for analyses by EPA Method 8260 (volatile
organics by GC/MS), and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH). The EPA Method
8260 analysis showed benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethylbenzene (BTXE) were
present in the sample in concentrations of 1 ug/L or less, except toluene at 3.0 ug/L.
The TPH analysis showed 2 mg/L TPH, described as "weathered diesel fuel".
Diesel fuel tank system 879-DlU1 remains buried and in-use at a location next to the
excavation to remove gasoline tanks 879-GlU1 and 879-G2U1. 879-DlU1 is a doubly-
contained system installed in 1987. It is continuously monitored for leak tightness
and is not suspected of having leaked, although overfilling is a possibility and may
account for the presence of diesel fuel in the water sample.
The results of analysis of the water sample were received on March 23, 1994, and
verbally reported to Bill Snavely of your office on the same day.
An Equal Opportunity Employer-University of California a P.O.Box 808 Livermore.CA 94551-9900-Telephone(5 10)422-1100 *Twx 910-366-8339 UCLLL LWP
