•
•
•
Gl. General
This installation procedure requires the
AWARNING use of powered hand tools. Fluid Con-
tainment recommends air driven tools
wherever possible. Do Not use electric
hand tools where flammable vapors or liq-
uids are present. Also, when hand tools
are used, be aware of potential shock haz-
ards. Wear protective clothing and eye
protection.
Secondary pipe fittings (see Section G3):
• Can be field installed using Fluid Containment supplied
two piece FRP coupling.
❑ Coupling is cemented in place to provide a water-
tight seal for high groundwater applications.
Electrical conduit fittings (see Section G5):
• Can be field installed using an optional Fluid Contain-
ment two-piece steel coupling.
❑ Coupling is cemented in place to provide a water-
tight seal for high groundwater applications.
G2. Fitting Placement and Alignment
FRP couplings and steel electrical conduit couplings:
• Must be aligned radially to center of turbine enclosure/
piping sump (to minimize potential for water infiltra-
tion at piping penetration).
• Should be placed to not interfere with adhesive channel
of turbine enclosure or adhesive seam of piping sump.
Correct _ ! \ t __ Incorrect
Alignment \ f Alignment
i
Turbine Enclosure
(Top View)
The FRP couplings and grommets should be aligned
radially to the center of the turbine enclosure/ piping sump.
G3. FRP Coupling Installation
Note: Do Not Use the Field Installed FRP Coupling in
Primary Piping.
The adhesive and catalyst are flammable.
AWARNING Also, the catalyst contains methyl ethyl ke-
toneperoxide (MEKP) a known eye and
skin irritant. Observe safe handling pro-
cedures. Always wear impermeable gloves
and chemical splash goggles when handling
or mixing adhesive. Keep adhesive and
catalyst away from sparks and open flame.
Optional FRP coupling (3" and 4" diameter) kit includes:
❑ Two piece fitting
❑ Adhesive
❑ Mixing Stick
❑ Putty knife
❑ Sandpaper
Note: Contractor must supply a ig saw or hole saw
(4'/Z" diameter for 3" coupling or '/2" diameter for 4"
coupling) to cut hole for fitting.
• Field installed Fluid Containment supplied FRP coupling
is designed as a secondary containment fitting.
❑ Outer jacket of double-wall piping is connected to
FRP coupling.
❑ Primary piping passes through FRP coupling.
How to install FRP Coupling:
Step #1 Cut Hole
• Layout piping trench.
❑ Double -Wall piping systems (particularly double
wall FRP pipe) are stiffer and less forgiving of im-
proper alignment than single wall piping.
• Mark location of fittings on turbine enclosure.
• Use a hole saw (4'/2" diameter for 3" coupling, 5'/z" di-
ameter for 4" coupling) or jig saw (both provided by
contractor) to cut a hole at marked location.
❑ Although carbide tipped blade will last longer, any
steel saw blade can cut hole.
Step #2 Sand and Clean Mating Surfaces
• Use supplied sandpaper (60 grit) to sand an area around
drilled hole on both inside and outside ofturbine enclosure.
❑ Turbine enclosure surface must be sanded "white"
to ensure proper bond.
❑ Sanded area should radiate at least 3" out from hole
edges.
• Sand FRP fitting flanged surfaces.
• Use clean, dry cloth to remove sanding dust from all
sanded surfaces.
• If surfaces are contaminated with grease or piping dope,
use clean solvent to thoroughly clean bonding surfaces,
then resand surfaces (see page 26 for detail drawing).
25
Incorrect positioning
of the fittings.
Turbine
Turbine
The fitting interferes
Enclosure
RIGHT Enclosure
with the adhesive
channel seam.
Secondary
Correct positioning
Secondary
Containment
of the fitting.
Containment
Collar
The fitting does not
Collar.
interfere with the
adhesive channel
WRONG
seam.
Correct _ ! \ t __ Incorrect
Alignment \ f Alignment
i
Turbine Enclosure
(Top View)
The FRP couplings and grommets should be aligned
radially to the center of the turbine enclosure/ piping sump.
G3.
