G5. Electrical Steel Coupling Installation
• Adhesive and catalyst are flammable.
AAlso
WARNING the catalyst contains methyl ethyl
ketone peroxide (MEKP), a known eye
and skin irritant. Observe safe handling
procedures. Always wear impermeable
gloves and chemical splash goggles
when handling or mixing adhesive.
Keep adhesive and catalysts away from
sparks and open flame.
Note: An optional l" diameter steel coupling can be field
installed on wall of Fiberglass Turbine Enclosure (TE)
for use with steel electrical conduit.
Installation kit includes:
• Two piece 1" steel coupling.
• Adhesive.
• Mixing stick.
• Sandpaper.
• Putty knife.
• Instruction sheet
• How To Install Electrical Steel Coupling
Step #1 Cut Hole
• Drill 2" diameter hole (using contractor supplied car-
bide tipped or masonry hole saw) at marked coupling
location.
Step #2 Sand and Clean
• Use supplied sandpaper (60 grit) to sand area around drilled
hole on both inside and outside of turbine enclosure.
❑ Turbine enclosure must be sanded "white" to insure
proper bond.
❑ Sanded area should radiate at least 3" out from hole
edges.
• Sand inside of flanged faces of both coupling sections.
• Use clean, dry cloth to clean sanding dust from all sanded
surfaces.
Step #3 Mix and Apply Adhesive
Note: Mix adhesive in accordance with instructions in
adhesive kit. Adhesive shelf life is six months.
•Make sure all surfaces are dry.
• Follow Adhesive Application Guidelines in Section F5.
• Apply adhesive to prepared surfaces on both fiberglass
• turbine enclosure and coupling flanges.
Step #4 Attach Steel Coupling
• Insert male threaded coupling section from outside of
turbine enclosure.
• Screw female threaded section onto male section from
inside of turbine enclosure.
• Tighten down both sections by hand tightening until ad-
hesive is squeezed out from flange faces.
• Use flat stick or supplied putty knife to fill in all gaps
around fitting flange/turbine enclosure joint.
Step #5 Curing
• Allow minimum of four hours for adhesive to harden
completely.
❑ Do not move or impact coupling during hardening
process.
• For outside temperatures under 60°F, apply heat to as-
sure proper adhesive curing.
❑ Heat may be applied using a heat gun.
❑ See Adhesive Application Guidelines in section F5.
• Complete successful test of the steel coupling.
❑ See Section F7, hydrostatic water test for details.
• Install conduit onto the coupling.
1" Steel Coupling
Turbine Enclosure Wall
(Exterior Surface)
Female Section
j
t
T Sand inner surface of coupling and
outer surface of Fiberglas pipe.
Apply adhesive to inside surface of
FRP coupling and outside surface of
FRP pipe just before final assembly.
Step #6 Disposal of Unused Catalyst, Adhesive
• Mix unused tubes of catalyst and any unused adhesive
(as described above) to form a solid for safe disposal.
• Dispose resulting solid as a nonhazardous waste in ac-
cordance with federal, state and local regulations.
G6. Testing Periodic Maintenance
If turbine enclosure fittings have been abused, damaged,
or worn:
• Test turbine enclosure immediately for potential leaks.
In normal service:
• Use standing water test as described in Section F7.
Note: Leak test turbine enclosure and fittings at least
once a year or more frequently, if code requires.
27
