To achieve the most reliable piping system, it is essen- Fittings are manufactured to accept either a tapered spigot
tial that the installation crew be familiar with the or T.A.B. spigot end of the pipe. Tapers can be made in
joining techniques described in this manual. Note the field with tools specially designed for this purpose (see
especially Section 6. Section 5). Bells cannot be field -made. When a belled
end is needed, use a bell x bell coupling.
7. Proper and safe methods of testing are recommended
to assure that the bonded joints in the piping system
have been properly bonded and cured. See Sections 6
and 7.
1.4.2 Bell and Spigot Joining Method
The adhesive bonded, tapered bell and spigot joint is the
primary joining method for 2"-4" (50 mm -100 mm) pipe -
to -fittings (see Fig. 1.4.1).
Bell x Spigot Joint
FIGURE 1.4.1
The T.A.B. (threaded and bonded) joint is the primary
joining method for pipe -to -couplings (see Fig. 1.4.2). The
mechanical locking action—when combined with the ad-
hesive—promotes positive make-up of the joint and pre-
vents backout during adhesive curing.
T.A.B. Because
these materials are irritating, good ventilation for the in-
stallation crew should be used to prevent exposure.
Pipe is supplied with TAB. spigot x T.A.B. spigot ends.
. Three sleeve couplings are supplied per 100 feet of pipe. A nuisance dust breathing filter should be used when
working in areas where wind and dust are present.
7
