CAUTION: Do not use chemical <br />heat packs for prewarming. <br />b. Brush adhesive on both surfaces, applying a thin <br />uniform coating (see Fig. 1.6.11). Adhesive should <br />FIGURE 1.6.11 <br />always be worked into the machined surface by ap- <br />plying pressure during application. This will "wet <br />out" the machined surface and maintain the re- <br />quired thin bond line. Be sure that adhesive is <br />deep down into the bell past the insertion depth <br />and that all machined taper surfaces on the spigot <br />and the cut end of the pipe are uniformly covered. <br />Excess adhesive will make the joint more diffi- <br />cult to lock and can result in a flow restriction. <br />Wet out the machined surfaces with a thin layer of <br />adhesive to produce a good bond. To prevent cont- <br />amination, apply adhesive to the bell first. <br />Connections into fittings are made using the normal <br />bell and spigot method. A threaded (T.A.B.) spigot can <br />be bonded into a smooth bell (fitting), or a smooth <br />spigot can be bonded into a threaded (T.A.B.) bell. <br />c. Align and lock the joint. For 2" (50 mm) pipe, in- <br />sert spigot into the bell until surfaces touch, then <br />push and 0 <br />turn at the <br />same time <br />until a <br />lock is <br />achieved <br />(see Fig. <br />1.6.12). <br />Only a <br />quarter <br />turn to a <br />half turn <br />is usually <br />needed. <br />On 3" and 4" (75 mm and 100 mm) diameter pipe, <br />or on fittings, pushing and turning to lock the joint <br />is impractical, and driving force must be used. <br />If the adhesive or the pipe surfaces are cool, push <br />and hold for a few seconds to allow time for the ad- <br />hesive to start flowing out of the tapered joint. If <br />additional force is needed, a rubber mallet or a <br />strong piece of wood and a hammer to drive the <br />pipe together is the preferred method. <br />d. Check lock up by moving free end of pipe in an up- <br />and-down or side-to-side motion. The movement <br />must be sufficient to move the joint being checked. <br />No movement should be visible in the joint. If any is <br />movement exists, the joint is not locked up, and <br />the joint assembly procedure must be repeated. <br />When using <br />a hammer, <br />place a <br />strong board <br />(2x4) flat <br />across the <br />bell. The <br />first few raps <br />should be <br />light to pre- <br />vent any <br />tendency of <br />the joint to <br />back out <br />(see Fig. 1.6.13). <br />FIGURE 1.6.13 <br />When the adhesive starts squeezing out of the <br />joint, use stronger blows. Proper pipe alignment is <br />important. Maintain back pressure against previ- <br />ously assembled joints to avoid shaking them <br />loose. After the joint has started to make up, hit <br />until no further engagement can be seen at the <br />joint. When engagement stops, the joint is locked. <br />Check for proper engagement by using the method <br />described in paragraph d. <br />12 — Installation Instructions <br />
