II.All employees need to understand the procedures to be used in responding to various kinds
of emergencies involving spills of hazardous materials. This section of the Emergency
Response Procedures, outlines the First Aid Procedures for exposure to gasoline and diesel
fuel from each Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). All employees need to know this
information for their own personal safety, the safety of their co-workers as well as the safety
of customers that could be exposed. The MSDS's for these and other work site chemicals are
1=lled by product type in the Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) Binder at the cashier area.
First Aid Procedures for Exposure to Gasoline and Diesel
A. EYE CONTACT: Flush with water for 15 minutes while holding eyelids open and seek
attention immediately.
B. SKIN CONTACT: Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Flush affected area with
soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Follow by washing with soap and water. Do
not reuse clothing until cleaned, contaminated shoes must not be reused. If irritation
persists, seek medical attention.
C. INHALATION (Breathing): Remove victim to fresh air and provide oxygen if
breathing is difficult. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. Get medical attention
immediately.
D. INGESTION (Swallowing):
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING BECAUSE GASOLINE CAN ENTER LUNGS AND CAUSE
SEVERE LUNG DAMAGE! If vomiting occurs spontaneously keep head below hips to
prevent aspiration of liquid into lungs and seek medical attention immediately.
E. NOTE TO PHYSICIAN: If more than 2.0 ml per kg has been ingested and vomiting
has not occurred, emesis should be induced with medical supervision. Keep victim's
head below hips to prevent aspiration. If symptoms such as loss of gag reflex,
convulsions or unconsciousness occur before emesis, gastric lavage using a cuffed
endotracheal tube should be considered.
F. For further information, consult the Materials Safety Data Sheets for these products
and for other hazardous materials in the HAZCOM Binder.
G. OTHER WORKPLACE CHEMICALS: Before handling ANY chemical, employees
must review the MSDS for PROTECTIVE MEASURES (PPE), HEALTH HAZARD
DATA, SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES, and FIRST AID procedures.
ANNUAL CLASSROOM EMPLOYEE TRAINING TOPICS
• Hazwoper
• Hazard Communication
• Lock-Out/Tag-Out
• California Impact Valve& Nozzle Operation
• Fire Safety
• Safety Orientation
• SB 198 Injury Illness &Prevention Program
• Emergency Response&Spill Cleanup Procedures
• UST Monitoring System Alarm Response&Reporting
• Robbery Prevention System
• Alcohol and Tobacco Awareness
RFC Workbook Section 7-Emergency Response Page 8 of 4 Form#ER-1 Revision Date: January 2007
