site. The HSC is available to assist the PM or the FSO in determining the
appropriate instrumentation.
Direct-reading instrumentation will be calibrated per manufacturer's
instructions. Cylinders of the appropriate calibration gas will be required
for field work lasting longer than 1 day.
Under stable site conditions, ambient air monitoring will be conducted at
least once every 2 hours in the workers' breathing zone and at other
locations based on the professional judgment of the FSO or the Division
H&S Advisor. Ambient air monitoring results will be recorded on the
Ambient Air Monitoring Form found in Appendix I. If site conditions
become unstable or change dramatically, or if there is a question
regarding the adequacy of engineering controls and PPE used, ambient air
monitoring will be conducted more frequently based on the professional
judgment of the FSO or the Division H&S Advisor.
Table 5-1 outlines the steps to be taken by the FSO when the action levels
of the dust are exceeded. Respiratory protection is selected based on
occupational exposure limits of the constituents at the site and the
potential for exposure to dust from site activities.
TABLE 5-1: Action Levels and Response Actions Requirements
Chemical Action Level Response Actions
Dust Greater than • Stop work and leave the immediate area.
0.5 milligrams per • FSO evaluates need for Tyvek coveralls, dons half-face
cubic meter respirator with high efficiency particulate air(HEPA)filter
(mg/m3) cartridges and monitors again after allowing dust to dissipate.
sustained in the • If readings are less than 0.5 mg/m3,resume work.
breathing zone for • If readings are 0.5 mg/m3 or greater, resume work wearing
1 minute half-face respirator with P100 cartridge and Tyvek coveralls,if
required.
• Notify PM and PIC of changed conditions.
Greater than • Stop work and leave the immediate area.
2.0 mg/m3 • Contact PM and Project HSC.
sustained in the • Evaluate work practices and assess engineering controls to
breathing zone for reduce airborne concentrations.
1 minute. • Implement dust suppression.
• FSO waits 15 minutes, evaluates need for Tyvek coveralls,
dons half-face respirator with P100 cartridges,and approaches
work area slowly.
