0
4. INVESTIGATION IMPLEMENTATION
4.1 Pre-Field Activities
Prior to the start of field activities, the following will be performed:
• Drilling permits will be obtained from San Joaquin County Environmental Health
Department;
• Access agreements will be established with the off-Site property owners as necessary to
complete the data gap investigation. All property owners, including Simplot, will be
notified of the proposed scope of work, work hours, and schedule in advance of field
implementation.
• A site-specific health and safety plan (HASP) will be prepared. The HASP will be
available on-Site during all field activities. Prior to the start of field activities and at the
beginning of each work day, a safety tailgate meeting will be conducted;
• All contractors working on Simplot property will successfully complete Simplot's
Contractor Health and Safety Training.
• The boring locations will be marked with white paint or stakes and underground service
alert (USA) will be contacted a minimum of 48 hours prior to commencement of drilling
activities; and
• A private utility locator will perform physical surveys to clear potential subsurface
utilities, pipelines, or other obstructions at the proposed boring locations prior to drilling
work.
4.2 Investigation Activities
4.2.1 Drilling and Geologic Logging
The borings will be drilled by a C57-licensed drilling contractor using a sonic drilling rig. The
continuous geologic core from the sonic drilling will be logged by a field geologist under the
direction of a California Professional Geologist using the Unified Soil Classification System
(USCS). All downhole equipment will be decontaminated prior to use.
The borings will be advanced until the top of the Corcoran Clay is encountered. The Corcoran
Clay is expected to be encountered at depths between 210 and 300 ft bgs. Once the Corcoran
Clay has been encountered at the boring location the drilling will be stopped.
To better understand the characteristics of the soil from the borings for use in evaluation of
remedial alternatives and potential future remedy extraction or injection well designs, two to six
soil samples will be collect from boring Locations 2 and 3 and submitted to a laboratory for sieve
analysis. The number and depths of the samples will be based on the geologic log. Soil core
boxes for all the borings will be prepared and kept on-Site for future use in remedial design, as
needed.
Site Characterization Work Plan 6 June 22,2018
