i
Iwater is associated with the bacterial cells and the culture is very viscous The nutrients in
. the media at this time have been exhausted and the bacteria are still in the log phase of
growth This cream is composed of bacteria reaching population of 101° (or more) per
milliliter of water
The microbial ("spent") broth was applied using a battery-operated hand sprayer After
application, water was again applied, and the cell re-covered with plastic sheeting Purge
water from monitoring wells on-site, stored in drums, was later added to the treatment cell
to increase moisture content and aid bioremediation
3.3 Monitoring Activities
' Three soil samples were collected from the treatment cell on October 4, 1993, to monitor
the progress of the treatment cell An additional set of three samples was collected on
' October 21, 1993 The samples were collected from the north, central and south areas of
the treatment cell at depths of 15 to 2 feet using a metric soil sampler loaded with two
clean, 2 by 3-inch brass tubes The ends of the lead tubes were covered with aluminum
Isheets, capped and sealed with tape The samples were logged on a chain-of-custody,
transported in a chilled container to McCampbell Analytical, Inc (MAI) and analyzed for
rPH as gasoline and BTE&X in accordance with EPA methods 8015 and 8020, respectively
' 4.0 FINDINGS
No TPH or BTE&X were detected In soil samples collected from the treatment cell The
laboratory report and chain-of-custody for the soil samples are included in Appendix A
On November 2, 1993, and upon approval of the PHS/EHD, the treated soil was returned
to the excavation and compacted using a loader
5.0 CONCLUSIONS & RECOMMENDATIONS
5.1 Soil Contamination
i Approximately 125 to 150 cubic yards of contaminated soil were removed from the former
UST location The soil was stockpiled In a lined treatment cell and treated with 50 gallons
of bacterial broth (or inoculum) Samples collected from the treatment cell 20 and 35 days
i after inoculation indicate that the soil was successfully remediated by the hydrocarbon-
consuming microbes The soil was returned to the excavation and compacted
i5.2 Monitoring Wells
Groundwater contamination was not confirmed in the three monitoring wells during the
igroundwater investigation The data indicate that groundwater has not been impacted We
0-1.6-1A.d.1 I.— Inc L
a-rrdy R.pwW 2 930.1 5 6
i
