4 . TREATMENT PROCEDURES
Twelve to 16 species of microbes, in a liquid broth culture, are
then inoculated. The piles are subsequently covered with
polyethylene sheeting and secured properly to minimize the release
of volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere.
If necessary, three to four intake pipes (with caps) are inserted
into the piles to facilitate additional inoculation without having
to remove the polyethylene sheeting. The intake pipes serve also as
water injection ports to maintain a constant moisture level ranging
from 20% to 50% saturation in order to create a suitable condition
for biodegradation.
5. QUALITY CONTROL
Samples are obtained on a regular basis to monitor the propagation
of microbial populations and the incremental degradation of the
hydrocarbons. If deemed necessary, additional microbe inoculation
and nutrient supplements are added.
To confirm the successful degradation of hydrocarbons, soil samples
are obtained and analyzed every four weeks during the clean-up
process for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in accordance with
EPA method 8015m and for purgeable aromatic hydrocarbons in
accordance with EPA method 8020.
The perimeter of the treatment area is monitored for the presence
of VOC using a photo-ionization detector (PID) calibrated to
isobutylene. The tightness of the vapor containment is inspected on
a regular basis to minimize the VOC release, if any.
6. HEALTH AND SAFETY
The remediation action is supervised by an on-site geologist
trained to perform and supervise investigation and remedial actions
at hazardous waste sites as specified in the OSHA Hazardous Waste
Operations and Emergency Response Standard (29 CFR 1910. 120 (e) ) .
All personnel handling the microorganism solution are outfitted
with gloves, boots, eye and respiratory protection (if necessary) .
A portable first-aid kit and a water hose are on-site in case of
emergencies. The hose is used to decontaminate the protective
apparels at the end of each day. Tools are decontaminated at the
end of the work day.
. A health and safety plan is posted on-site. All crew members are
briefed of this plan prior to work initiation.
5
