Biotechnical Laboratory and Consulting Sennoes
Surnmaa ofAng&ses (Lab ID BL-RE-AT 1-3)
BloLogic is pleased to offer Ramage Environmental the following observations regarding the
results of microbial and physicochemical analyses performed on water samples collected from the
AG Tracy site Please keep In mind that these findings were predicated only on data generated
from BnoLogic To effectively provide a complete interpretation of site-specific microbial
dynamics and present appropriate recommendations, we would require additional information
regarding current site operations, particularly those pertaining to nutrient supplementation.
For a site undergoing active bioremediation, it appeared that both general (heterotrophic,
nonspecific) and selective (contaminant-specific) microbial population numbers were relatively
low These low recoveries could be attributed to any number of environmental factors, for
example, limited TPH concentrations, nutrient deficiencies, or conversely, nutrient overloading
Another factor which often contributes to low population counts is the presence of"swarming"
bacteria that spread over the surface of a culture effectively preventing the growth of other
organisms through competition for available space Varying degrees of swarmers were observed
on the majority of the plates counted which may suggest that the actual population numbers may
be higher than those reported
An important parameter in presenting a microbiological profile of a site is determining the relative
percentage of selective degraders to the overall microbial population For the samples evaluated,
the relative percentage of selective microorganisms to the total number of heterotrophs ranged
from 21 05 to 41 18% Generally, as a rule of thumb, a percentage in the range of 20% or higher
typically Is considered acceptable for achieving a degree of contaminant biodegradation
Although the percentage of degraders would be considered good, the overall number of microbes
is low
he site 4 84 - 21.12 rn
The Physicochemical data indicated that current nitrate levels at t ( ppm),
appeared to be low at this time All other parameters analyzed for physicochem istry were within
acceptable ranges
BioLogic thanks Ramage Environmental for the opportunity to provide you this report, should
you have any questions please contact your site project manager, Ken Farrar, at 209-245-4596
I
